Robert Stein Vineyard has released their eagerly anticipated 2018 Robert Stein Dry Riesling ($30) and 2018 Robert Stein Half Dry Riesling ($35).For 180 years, the Stein family has been intrinsically linked to Riesling.
When Jacob Stein’s forebear Johann Stein stepped foot in Sydney in 1838 with a handful of Riesling cuttings he and his wife would never have anticipated the bright future of winemaking in this unfamiliar southern land.
The Robert Stein Vineyard was established in 1976 with plantings of Riesling among the first planted by Robert and his family. 30 years later winemaker Jacob Stein was exploring his winemaking passion with vintages in Germany’s historic Rheingau vineyards; vineyards that his ancestors of eight generations had worked in.
This experience and link to this noble variety is now playing out with great success. Over the past ten vintages Robert Stein Riesling has helped resurge Mudgee’s Riesling with an enviable consistency of awards.
“The 2018 vintage was an excellent vintage in Mudgee, albeit dryer than 2016 and 2017,” said Jacob. “We have been lucky, with the past few years proving to be great vintages. However, having 40 year old vines certainly helps.”
While the crop was smaller, the 2018 Robert Stein Dry Riesling shows many similarities to previous vintages. “We lend toward a more citrus style with our Rieslings. They are made to show the region’s fruit intensity and longevity.
“Our Robert Stein Half Dry Riesling was whole bunch pressed in the cool morning of harvest with the pressings kept separate and let ferment wild in seasoned French Hogsheads. This ensured complexity in the finished wine. The fermentation was cool and slow and stopped at 15 grams residual sugar.”
