Mudgee’s Robert Stein Wines has made history, being the first Mudgee winemaker to be awarded a Trophy at the Sydney Royal Wine Show.
The 2016 Robert Stein Dry Riesling was awarded The Douglas Lamb Perpetual Trophy for the Best Riesling of the Show at last night’s Wine Show Awards Dinner.
Winemaker Jacob Stein has been making wine at his family’s winery for ten years, having returned to Mudgee after a number of years gaining valuable experience across the world.
“It was fantastic to be awarded this Trophy for our Riesling,” commented Jacob. “The team has spent a considerable number of years working on the vineyard and the winemaking with the objective of continual improvement.
“We believe that this Trophy is the first ever Sydney Royal Wine Show Trophy to be awarded to a Mudgee wine which is exceptional.
“This is a real sign of the maturing of the region, which is going from strength to strength. Mudgee has a number of young winemakers who aren’t constrained by past paradigms and are looking to innovate and collaborate. The region is no longer just about shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.”
The Robert Stein Dry Riesling is made from the original planting of Riesling on the vineyard which are over 40 years old. “We also have the luxury of purchasing small parcels of grapes from within the region to give us options for blending prior to bottling,” elaborated Jacob. “While there are only a relatively small number of Riesling vineyards in Mudgee, the best are growing on great sites and are mature.”
Riesling is the flagship wine for Robert Stein, having accumulated an impressive 30 trophies and 45 gold medals in the past four vintages alone. The building of quality has been the foremost goal for Jacob with this Sydney Royal Wine Show Trophy testament to the quality of region and the winemaking involved.
The Trophy comes at a special time for Mudgee which is celebrating 40 years of its Mudgee Wine Festival, one of the longest running wine festivals in the country.
